What Is Hemp Seed Oil?

Posted by Tatiana Crichton on

Hemp Seeds come from the hemp plant which has been used for thousands of years for their industrial, medicinal and nutritional properties.  Hemp Seed Oil is delicious and regarded as superior to its popular contenders of flax seed oil, fish oil and other nut oils as its balance and completeness of EFA's (Essential Fatty Acids) are the closest to our bodies own requirements.  EFA's are the "good fats" and are required for the bodies most basic functions.

Some of its many Health Benefits:

1. You will just feel better.

Taking hemp seed oil regularly helps keep your body running well with reduced joint pain, healthier hair and skin, a healthy heart,  better balanced hormones and a supercharged mind.

How will you feel better?

Hemp seed oil is exceptionally rich in two essential fatty acids (EFA's), linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3).  These are ESSENTIAL for many important functions in your body from hormone creation to the protective oil on your skin.

These EFA's are not able to be produced in your body and need to be taken from your diet.  Western diets are often deficient in essential fats and as a result you may be too.

To break it down, the EFAs in hemp seed oil are necessary for the following processes:

  • Formation of healthy cell membranes
  • Proper development and functioning of the brain and nervous system
  • Proper thyroid and adrenal activity
  • Hormone production
  • Regulation of blood pressure, liver function, immune and inflammatory responses
  • Crucial for the transport and breakdown of cholesterol
  • Support healthy skin and hair

2. Helps Relieve Skin Disorders

Studies (here and here) show the importance of the ratio of omega fatty acids in your body.  A 3:1 ratio of omega 3 and omega 6 has been adopted as the ideal balance.  Hemp seeds contain this ideal balance.

Hemp seeds consumed has been shown to cause significant changes in plasma fatty acid profiles and improve clinical symptoms of atopic dermatitis in this study which is backed by many like it.

3. Helps Relieve Arthritis Symptoms

Hemp Oil helps relieve joint pain and inflammation.  Adequate levels of GLA are required to maintain a healthy balance of anti-inflammatory signalling molecules in the human body.

With age and stress the enzymes responsible for producing GLA decrease in activity. Increasing GLA intake overcomes this deficiency and can help restore a healthy balance to suppress inflammation.

A 6 month study published in the journal of Arthritis and Rheumatism showed that consuming the GLA found in hemp seeds reduced arthritis symptoms by 25%.

Containing linoaleic acid, hemp seed oil helps regulate the amount of sebum your body produces.  Sebum is the oil your skin releases to protect and moisturise itself.  Replenishing this can help the skin repair and protect itself.

Many people use hemp oil and hemp based balms (such as our comfrey balm) to help relieve eczema and other skin conditions but taking hemp seeds oil has shown the same effects.

How it's made:

Hemp seed oil features a light nutty taste and can be used in recipes, taken on its own or used externally.  Its produced by cold, mechanical pressing of the whole hemp seed.  No chemicals or heat used.  The oil is then cold filtered to remove any naturally suspended solids.  All this is done on certified organic machinery in an allergen free environment.
