Why Should I Start Eating Hemp Seeds?
1. They are impressively nutritious
Technically a nut, hemp seeds are very nutritious. They have a mild, nutty flavor and are often referred to as hemp hearts.
Hemp seeds contain over 30% fat. They are exceptionally rich in two essential fatty acids, linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3). They also contain gamma-linolenic acid, which has been linked to several health benefits for conditions such as arthritis, nerve damage due to diabetes, eczema, high blood pressure, and other conditions.
A great protein source, hemp seeds have more than 25% of their total calories are from high-quality protein. That is considerably more than similar foods like chia seeds and flax seeds, whose calories are 16–18% protein.
Hemp seeds are also an exceptional source of vitamin E and minerals, such as phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulphur, calcium, iron and zinc.
Hemp seeds can be consumed raw, cooked or roasted. Hemp seed oil is also very healthy and has been used as a food and medicine in China for at least 3,000 years.
2. May Reduce Your Risk of Heart Disease
Heart disease is very common and its well known diet can play a big part in its cause and treatment. Hemp helps in another way. Hemp seeds contain high amounts of the amino acid arginine, which produces nitric oxide in your body.
Nitic oxide is a "vaso dilator" meaning it causes your blood vessels to relax assisting to lower blood pressure. In a study of over 13,000 people, a discernible decrease in the C-reactive protein (a marker of heart disease risk) was observable in patients with a higher intake of arginine.
The more hemp seeds are tested and trialled, the more uses are found.
3. May Relieve Skin Disorders
Studies (here and here) show the importance of the ratio of omega fatty acids in your body. A 3:1 ratio of omega 3 and omega 6 has been adopted as the ideal balance. Hemp seeds contain this ideal balance.
Hemp seeds consumed has been shown to cause significant changes in plasma fatty acid profiles and improve clinical symptoms of atopic dermatitis in this study which is backed by many like it.
4. Great Source of Protein
A quarter of the calories in hemp seed come from protein. By weight, hemp seeds have about the same level of protein found in beef and lamb. Even better, hemp seeds are considered a complete protein source meaning they contain ALL of the essential amino acids.
These cannot be produced inside your body and must be obtained through diet making hemp seeds an almost necessity for vegans or vegetarians.
Complete protein sources are very rare in the plant kingdom, as plants often lack the amino acid lysine. Quinoa is another example of a complete, plant-based protein source. Hemp seeds contain significant amounts of the amino acids methionine and cysteine, as well as very high levels of arginine and glutamic acid.
The digestibility of hemp protein is also very good, better than protein from many grains, nuts and legumes.
